ELECTROCHEM GHANA LIMITED CREATES DRAINAGE FOR FLOODING LOLONYA COMMUNITY

Lolonya (Ada), May 24, 2024  — Electrochem Ghana Limited (EGL), a subsidiary of the McDan Group specializing in industrial salt production, has come to the aid of Lolonya residents in the Ada West District by addressing severe flooding caused by recent tidal waves.

The intervention followed a major flood that struck the community on May 22 due to heavy tidal waves, which overwhelmed the usual barriers. The flooding affected key areas, including the local basic school and several homes.

EGL provided essential machinery and fuel to excavate canals, allowing floodwaters to be redirected from the community to the sea. Upon investigation, it was found that the Lolo stream, which connects to the Songor Lagoon, had its outlets blocked by sand deposited by the waves, preventing water from draining out.

Honorable Rockson Ahuakese, the assembly member for the area, explained that an initial request for assistance was denied because the letter had not been copied to the District Assembly. However, the urgency of the situation led him to resubmit the request with the support of the community’s chief and elders, prompting EGL to act swiftly.

The drainage work has successfully reduced the water levels, with EGL’s continued assistance evident in their creation of gutters along major community routes. Ahuakese noted the ongoing need for maintenance and additional support to clear the clogged gutters.

He also highlighted the area’s poor sanitation conditions, attributing them to the lack of a designated dumping site and inadequate refuse management tools. Ahuakese appealed to the public, NGOs, and other agencies for help, emphasizing the need for equipment such as rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, safety boots, and gloves to facilitate regular clean-up efforts and protect the community’s health and safety.
